About the project

T-Bank is a Russian commercial bank focused entirely on remote services, operating without any physical retail branches.

Brief

The currency rates section was outdated and contained a lot of irrelevant information. The task was to redesign the section to reflect the current economic situation. It also needed to be flexible, allowing the list of items on the screen and their display priority to be easily changed. Additionally, the visual style of the components needed a refresh.

Problems

  • An unclear entry point to the section.
  • Unclear exchange conditions.
  • Confusing navigation due to a complex screen architecture.
  • An outdated list of rates; precious metals were missing.

Goals

  • Increase profit from currency conversions.
  • Cross-sell the "Pro" subscription.
  • Reduce support tickets caused by confusing information in the section.

Desk research

To better understand the context of the task, I conducted research that included studying materials and articles on banking and currency rates, analyzing user reviews on various platforms, and analyzing apps from direct and indirect competitors.
Based on this research, I formulated several hypotheses that would become the foundation for the changes we planned to implement.

Hypotheses

Placing a currency rates widget on the home screen will simplify entry into the section
Adding a notification for when a target rate is reached will increase the number of planned conversions
Users will find it convenient to have "Currencies" and "Metals" tabs on the same screen
Placing an "Updated at XX:XX" block next to the rate will increase trust in the information's relevance
Highlighting the rate's dynamics (up or down) with colored arrows will encourage exchange actions
The ability to edit the contents of the currency widget will significantly increase its usefulness and frequency of use
Placing a banner with subscription benefits on the conversion screen will increase its conversion rate
Adding information about ATMs where users can withdraw cash currency to the "Currency Rates" screen will reduce support tickets
Including a rate chart with a date selector will reduce users' reliance on third-party currency services
Adding a "Convert" button to the account screen will speed up the flow and increase the number of conversions

User scenario

User

Ivan is a 30-year-old freelancer from Moscow. He's into tech and regularly buys gadgets from abroad through his contacts. He tracks currency rates, keeps some of his savings in dollars, and actively uses banking apps to manage his finances. He can't pay for purchases abroad directly, so he buys currency in advance when the rate is good.

Goals

  • Conveniently track rate changes.
  • Buy dollars at the best possible rate.

Pain points

  • Can't pay directly with foreign currency abroad.
  • Wants to see the currency rates he needs immediately upon opening the app.
  • Worries about missing a good rate, so he checks it daily.
  • Wants to see the rate's dynamics (how it's changing) during the conversion process.
  • Wants to get better exchange conditions.

Task flow

Prototypes and testing

To test the hypotheses, I conducted testing across several prototype iterations, starting with paper prototypes and moving to a high-fidelity interactive prototype.

Testing results

A customizable widget is added, with options to configure the displayed currencies, layout, rate-change arrows, and a smart mode.
A "Metals" tab is added to the currency screen to interest users in opening metal accounts and exploring the topic. Metal rates can also be added to the currency widget.
The "Rate Dynamics" page is removed, as users do not need charts or a currency calendar within the main banking app. Advanced users are directed to the "Investments" app.
Rate alerts are implemented. The button for this feature is moved to the main "Currencies and Metals" screen.
A banner with "Pro" subscription benefits is added to the conversion screen and to the final step of the rate alert setup.
